West Wight Wander 2009

West Wight Wander
Sunday 12 July 2009

The Route: The walk consists of two routes, 25 miles and 13 miles, to be completed by 1830hrs.

Both start and finish at Yarmouth Fire Station, Station Road, Yarmouth.

Following the coastal path to Alum Bay and The Needles, then to Freshwater, the short distance walkers return via the old railway track alongside the River Yar.

The Long distance route will be rerouted this year due to coastal erosion but will still  return via Newbridge and Shalfleet. The walk takes in outstanding coastal and downland views.

A route description will be available to all walkers.

Ordnance Survey Explorer Map No: 29 will be marked with both routes and on display at the start of the events.

All walkers must register at the start and collect their tally for checkpoint purposes.

Registration times will be arranged according to ferry arrival times – details to follow shortly.

West Wight Wander 2008

Last year’s walk was held on 5 October but unfortunately the weather was extremely wet and windy and conditions underfoot were very soggy. There were very few walkers but those hardy souls that took part, apart from getting a good soaking, were able to enjoy some of the beautiful scenery on offer and appreciate the elements in action.

Having moved the event to a summer date it is very much hoped that the weather will be kinder and more people will be drawn to the island to be able to appreciate the fantastic beauty of the coast and landscape.
